Roof Accessories
The roof accessories have changed and evolved as my needs have changed. I began with a 2 bar set of Thule roof racks (dealer fitted) and eventually changed to a 3 bar set of Heavy Duty Rhino Racks to accommodate the Foxwing awning (passenger side) and the other things that were to be added over time. The Foxwing Awning was the 1st thing added, followed by two pieces of 100mm PVC pipe. After that was a Rhino half size luggage basket, later removed, and a 600mm light bar.
Eventually I had an aluminium frame made from 50mm x 25mm x 3mm thick RHS. I had it powder coated in black. This became the new mount for the light bar and a 6" light bar on the rear for reversing and it also gave me a nice flat surface to mount the Maxtrax mounts. This framework also served to bind all 3 roof bars together and stiffen the entire structure. The roof is apparently only meant to have a maximum of a 70kg load and I think I am close to that and maybe even a little over.
On the Driver's side there is a set of Rhino shovel mount brackets and Rhino high lift Jack mounts. The shovel has a fibreglass handle so it's quite light but the jack.. I don't even know what that weighs. With the entire rack system bolted together by way of the frame I had made, I am confident that it will hold everything and share the load on all 6 roof mounting points. I am also confident that there would be a safety margin built into their calculations when they state a 70kg maximum. The Rhino bars themselves are not the issue. It is the roof of the car that is in question.
